Text Box: Introduction

The Conservatives are the largest party in local government in England and led the way in providing high quality local services in Taunton Deane. Conservatives put people first and we are committed to providing value for money services and place great emphasis on freedom of choice, democracy and participation by local people.

Over the past 4 years Conservatives have changed the face of the Council. In 2004 our strong and focused leadership was recognised by the Audit Commission who awarded us ‘Excellent’ Council status. We are one of only four Councils in the South West to achieve this accolade. We continued to achieve this high standard giving high quality value for money services for the people in Taunton Deane.

The Council is responsible for services including housing, litter collection, recycling, planning, town centre management, leisure and recreation services, parks and economic development. The Council Offices are at The Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton.

Achievements 2003-2007

The Conservative role in a hung council with no party having overall control will be to provide constructive opposition to achieve the best possible outcomes for the people of Taunton Deane. Our particular priorities will be:

Continuing Conservative achievements in providing good value for money for council tax payers
Making the regeneration of Taunton happen
More affordable housing
Bring in doorstep recycling of plastic and cardboard
Build a new wheeled sports park for young people

Conservatives have been the driving force behind the Vision for Taunton. Now Project Taunton is about to become a reality. This will mean:

More retail and leisure development
7,000 more jobs
2,200 additional homes in Taunton
Redevelopment of Somerset County Cricket Ground for international matches
Extension of the Brewhouse
Improvement of the museum

Conservatives put people first. The regeneration is about Taunton’s status as a premier centre of the South West creating a thriving centre for sustainable business whilst also creating an outstanding place to live, work and play.
